Want To Slow Down? Head On Up:

By Dana Kroll, Uptown Marketing and Communications Specialist

Remember when the holidays felt simpler? When the season was less about hustle and bustle and more about slowing down, coming together, and making memories?

Remember wandering through neighborhood shops, discovering something unexpected or handcrafted with care, and the feeling of giving a gift that felt special and personal? How about meeting up at a friendly eatery for a meal and to toast the year ahead? When the best moments of the season weren’t necessarily the biggest or fanciest, but the little ones shared with the people we love?

If you’re feeling a little nostalgic lately, you’re in good company. It seems that for reasons unclear (or perhaps reasons aplenty), so many of us are in the mood for some old-school holiday magic this year. It is in that spirit that we invite you to experience the neighborhood through a new old lens. You may have called Uptown home for decades, you may visit us regularly, or perhaps you have yet to discover what makes this corner of Grand Rapids so special, but today’s blog is to remind all of our readers that some of the best parts of the holidays are the things that have been here all along. Let’s spend some time with an introduction (or reintroduction!) to our district, and all it holds, today. Our hope is that we can bring you some excitement about the wonderful ways that Uptown is ready to help you have a memorable and meaningful holiday season ahead. Let’s go!

Firstly, a refresher course: Located one mile east of Downtown GR, Uptown is home to four distinctive business districts.

Eastown is funky and eclectic, with independent shops and lively nightlife. East Fulton offers specialty shopping and the beloved Fulton Street Farmers Market. East Hills buzzes with boutiques, restaurants, and gathering places. Wealthy Street blends shopping and dining with cultural treasures like the historic Wealthy Theatre. Together, they create a walkable, welcoming community that’s equal parts artsy, lively, and fun.

Into history? Find it throughout the district, with beautifully preserved architecture dating back to the mid-1800s. There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about a place where the past and future are equally part of the present.

Want to talk shop? Across less than four square miles, you can discover more than 380 businesses, most independently owned and operated by the artisans, makers, and entrepreneurs who give Uptown its cutting-edge-meets-time-tested character. Explore boutiques, galleries, bookstores, specialty food shops, custom jewelers, and more for gifts that stand out under the tree while supporting the local economy. A visit to Uptown is a return to the days when gift-giving felt personal! In small business corridors like ours, every purchase comes with a story and makes an incredibly meaningful impact on the immediate community.

All that strolling can make a person hungry…and get this: Uptown is home to more than 100 inviting restaurants, wine bars, breweries, and comfy diner booths waiting to welcome your crowd for a festive meal or celebratory toast. It’s also worth remembering that oftentimes our fondest holiday memories are made around a table.

Looking for something to do? Try candle-making, whiskey blending, pottery throwing, or cooking classes. Explore yoga studios, creative workshops, and crafting spaces. In Uptown, memories made are just as special as the purchases you’ll bring home. Pro-tip: Giftcards make wonderful presents for the creatives and hands-on learners in your life, because time spent together might just be the best gift of all.

And speaking of things to do…
